First and foremost, thank you. None of the Florida death penalty abolition actions and achievements of 2018 would be possible without your support.
In 2018, Florida had 7 new death sentences, 2 executions, and the 28th Florida Death Row exoneration.
Here are some of the 2018 actions made possible by your support:
Public Education and Awareness Campaign: We commissioned surveys in high use counties that revealed registered voters now prefer a life sentence over a death sentence for those convicted of murder by margins of more than 2 to 1.
FADP Storyteller Project: People directly affected by the death penalty, including exonerated death row survivors and murder victim’s families, shared their stories at education and awareness events throughout the state in colleges, law schools, churches, public forums, the state legislature and with media.
Cities for Life, Cities Against the Death Penalty: As part of the worldwide death penalty abolition campaign, FADP helped coordinate and promote events, and arranged speakers for this annual abolition advocacy day. 18 events were held statewide on November 30..
State and Local Actions and Protests: Actions to the governor and local state attorneys. There were more than 25 execution vigils/protests statewide around the February 22 execution of Eric Branch and the December 13 execution of Jose Jimenez.
2019: New Partners, Projects, and Actions. Our ambitious 2018 outreach and organizing campaigns have created and strengthened partnerships with many diverse, and increasingly engaged Florida faith, community, social justice, and criminal justice groups. We will enter 2019 with many new collaborative commitments for increased advocacy actions and targeted campaigns. We will help facilitate, coordinate, and promote EJI Community Remembrance projects in the 48 Florida counties where more than 300 lynchings took place from 1878-1950 and make the connection between lynchings and today’s legalized lynchings. We look forward to continuing the expansion of Florida abolition actions and awareness.
This work simply cannot be done without your help. Please consider making a gift to make our 2019 work possible.
Thank you for your continued efforts, involvement, and support.
