I am always mindful that the phrase “Happy Father’s Day” is often a loaded one. I know that plenty of us have been blessed to have loving and supportive fathers, and that an equal amount of us have had vastly different experiences.
So today on this Father’s Day, I hold in my heart all of the fathers who have been impacted by our criminal justice system. I’m thinking about the fathers on death row, and their children. I know the grief and loneliness that they feel, especially on this day. I also hold in my heart the victims who were fathers, and their children, who I am certain feel their absence even more today. I grieve with you too.
I leave you all with the gentle reminder that the death penalty only causes more victims, and creates more fatherless children. We can and we must do better. And together we will.
Onward,
